You don’t buy a surface book looking at the tag . Hell yes it is damn expensive. You can get equally good laptops at lesser price . But then such niche products are bought with your heart not your mind . Yes you can do without it for sure . Really want the price on this to go down but the product is worth it.No issues .Let me list out what makes it an interesting buy and what is annoying after using it now for a while:-The Good-The best screen that i looked at – flawless and beautiful . The 3:2 Screen ratio is good for browsing and reading E mags . I have Jio mags loaded on bluestacks which i use frequently for reading E mags in tablet mode.-Works beautifully as my notebook . I use one note extensively in the university for my notes . The Surface pen is flawless besides using dictation in One note and word using Microsoft Dicta.-The Battery lasts for two days of my kind of usage . That hasnt happened with any of my previous laptops which includes a Toshiba ,Dell and a samsung.-The keyboard is good and the trackpad is one of the best i have used.-The Graphics card suffices for most of the light gaming that i tried out . Need to tweak the NVIDIA graphics to kick in by using NVIDIA panel to launch few games using discrete NVIDIA and not the integrated graphics.-The detach mechanism is near flawless barring one or two instances when i tried detaching halfheartedly . It requires a clean pull to detach and is a robust mechanism.- The magnetic charging port is cool.- windows hello is a life saviour . saves me the trouble of logging in .The Bad- why cant u bundle the pen with surface book microsoft . Have you heard someone buying this without a pen . Cost of the pen is not what bothers you – the trouble you have to go around buying it separately without knowing which pen should you buy . There are newer models of the pen which can use interchangeable tips.- There are accesories which you will end up buying like HDMI Ethernet VGA dongles, Laptop Bags . The surface dock is not enough for all your needs . Would save us lot of anxiety whether these will work when ordering from third party if microsoft had made it available.- I prefer charging ports on my left side .-The wifi isnt the kind which will steal your heart . Expected better link speeds in a laptop this class .- The bitlocker encryption is a pain and the key recovery will end up you giving a mouthful to microsoft . Happens sometime after you use USB dongles . Disabled the bitlocker in the settings so now it’s ok.SummaryThis is the best laptop I ever had . Having used it now for a while havent found anything which would make me regret having dented my purse a bit .

I bought this in 2019 august. the 15 inch variant . Its too early to review. but within these few days, im very satisfied with its performance. Also bought a Microsoft pen separately. even that works without a problem. I teach animation . so i need to take notes and draw pictures. all these are very enjoyable on this lappy. i detach at least twice a day. as this gets older, i will update this review. Now, a word on amazon shipping- i received the package damaged. only the laptop was safe in its polythene wrapper which was glued to its aluminium body. rest of the parcel was torn and damaged -like it was dragged over a floor for 20 minutes. I requested for a replacement initially but the return wanted me to wait for a pickup and i had travel plans.THIS NOW IS – AUG 2021- ITS BEEN ABOUT 2 years of use. LET me share a few experiences. The touch screen stopped working at 18 months. So i said no problem , i dont need the TOUCH feature. Then the pen input stopped working at around 20 months. I regretted the purchase. Then the ONLY USB-C port stopped working at 20 months. I was going through such a hectic professional schedule that I could not spare time to get in touch with the microsoft help desk. TODAY , i called microsoft help desk and explained my problems. The telecaller was helpful and somewhat efficient . BUT she told me , there is no repair of SURFACE products in INDIA. My option is to simply go for a paid exchange of the product . I need to pay about INR 56K ( about 25% of the original cost) to get a RENEWED product. I DECIDED NOT TO GET THE RENEWED PRODUCT. I have somewhat lost faith in MS SURFACE. Will not likely purchase a SURFACE hardware again. MY laptop is still working albeit without TOUCH, PEN INPUT and USB-C .

This device has a ARM based processor which is incompatible with most of the professional apps. Most of the apps like photoshop and others, this machine performs very bad. I recommend not to buy this product it is completely waste of money. The only good thing about this product is form factor and built quality but the performance is very poor.

Seeing problems after 3 months of usage – like does not switch on sometimes, touch screen does not work randomly. Surface prox keyboard and pen don’t work.Old reviewBrilliant product. Of course, not for everyone. It is a first generation product for Windows on Arm. And yes, it is costly. You are paying a premium. But, if you want to try something different, if you want to carry a futuristic product. Then this is for you. It is a pleasure to hold this and carry it around. Yes, some Applications will not work. It is about 75% compatibility now. All basic apps work – MS office – Word, excel, skype, teams and then Zoom, Slack, netflix etc. The list will increase as days go by.It definitely is not targeted towards serious developers or gamers.

Review written post two weeks of usage:I wanted to have this since the day it launched based on the looks alone. It took 8 months to launch in India. Thanks Microsoft!Firstly, this is my secondary work machine given to me by my company. I did not buy it with my own funds. Although I had the freedom to buy a laptop twice as expensive as this one, I still went for the SPX. I had two main reasons: Looks and Portability and it did not disappoint in either of those departments. No ways around it, it is a Stunning looking device; be it the chassis, the screen or the entire machine with the keyboard cover. It just looks and feels just as expensive as it is, perhaps a little more than that. The metal feels smooth to touch, (although I would recommend a skin for the back as it is a fingerprint magnet) and it doesn’t heat up at all and is silent being fanless. I already have a Toshiba workhorse which is just 1.2kgs and this being just about 1kg with the keyboard feels just unbelievable considering it runs the full Windows experience. I traveled a lot pre-Covid and intend to start again soon, so the lack of weight would surely help. It really checks the looks and portability space. Now for the Oh-so-controversial performance part:I mainly use my laptop for work via Outlook, Presentations, Excel and Word (in that order). Add to that light browsing (Chrome works just fine but to show off its speed I use the preferred MicrosoftEdge Canary browser) and ofcourse Netflix, Disney+ and the others. THIS MACHINE FLIES THROUGH ALL OF THE ABOVE MENTIONED without any hiccups. I haven’t gamed yet but I do intend to install Asphalt 9 which works fine according to YouTuber iJustine (check her unboxing video for more)I will be honest, a friend of mine is really interested in buying this but with his own money and I have asked him to either wait for the Surface pro 8 or go for the Surface Laptop 3. The only reason behind this is to be future proof. He will probably use this for more tasks than what I use and tomorrow if he wants to install a 64-bit only app, that may not run smoothly or at all (this works on the 32-bit ARM architecture). Just this one hiccup makes me advice you against buying this unless you are being gifted this or if you will NEVER EVER need to use any other apps that the ones that I use it for.I personally do not regret a bit buying this, intact I’m overwhelmed that I did go for this over the competition. It’s just that special! And special is all that I was looking for.Ask only sensible questions, if you have any for an answer. Hope this helps!

I currently have a Macbook Pro, and Surface Pro 7 and a Surface Go. Macbook Pro is used for all professional work, Surface Pro 7 is mainly used when I am travelling due to its weight and form factor, and Surface Go lies in my car and I use it for random surfing and checking mails /office communication when I go to cafes or restaurants.I was looking for a new laptop for personal use at home, specially when lying in bed or sitting on the couch. Surface Pros screen is a bit small for long usage and is best used when sitting on a table. I did a lot of research and shortlisted Macbook Air, Thinpad X390 and a few other laptops from Dell, HP and Lenovo. But eventually decided to go for Surface laptop 3 and have not been disappointed.Pros:Premium look and feel. Looks different and the platinum shade is very good, specially in bright environments.Very light weight, compact and easy to carry.Very bright sceen and good resolution. Touch functionality is plus.Very good typing experience.Solid built quality.Great performance, the 10th gen i5 shines.Good battery life.Competitive price.Taller screen due to its aspect ratio makes it much more usable for productivity aspects.Cons:Slight flex in keyboard because of Alcantara material, but does not hamper the typing experience. You get only around 70 GB of usable space when all installation is done. This is ok if you only use the laptop for surfing , using MS Office , or watching videos. Not suitable for professional use.The screen is very reflective and may need some adjustments in view angle in outside environments or under certain lighting conditions. All and all this is one of the best premium laptops out there and very good option to consider. Those who say its expensive dont know what they are talking about to be honest, In all the brands that I looked for ultra portable laptops including Apple, Dell, Lenovo Thinkpad etc. all configs which had Core i5 10th gen were costing 1L plus. This is surely one of the best Windows laptop at this price point.

Let me get this straight out of here… This device is not meant for everyone. BUT whoever wishes to own it will LOVE it!!!I am writing this review on the device itself just telling you its an awesome purchase. I have seen over 50 videos of the device on Youtube and not seen anywhere in store before purchasing it online on Amazon. I was still confident of the device because I knew exactly what it can and cannot do from the outset. It can do a lot of things like – Play Netflix, Productivity (Word, excel, powerpoint, teams, zoom) effortlessly… Go online and browse for stuff on Chrome or Edge meant for this system. You can listen to music and get almost a whole day out of the battery on a single charge. No problems at all! Its not laggy or slow… It works like a dream!Ok now when I said its not meant for everyone thats because of the compatibility issue with apps (No proper anti virus on board) and not as compatible as much what an Ipad can do. But comparing the two is also not correct since both are based on two different OS systems and the usage variesIf you boxes tick a lot for the Pro’s then go ahead and pick this device – Its slim, Ok in terms of weight, portable, amazing fast charging, LTE support (I use it a lot since WIFI struggles sometimes at home), Dam its HOT looking, The screen is gorgeous… I went in for the 8GB/128GB model which suits my needDefinitely buy the keyboard option with it – I went in for the keyboard+Pen option to give it a complete look and feel. Its kinda incomplete without both if you ask me. If not a pen person then go just for the keyboardThis is a great start for an ARM based system – The very first on the block – Its like a device from the future for sure!Hope this helps you guys to buy your X!Cheers!

Absolutely in love with my Surface Book 2! It needs no introduction and you can go to the product website and tons of youtube videos on reviews and unboxing. I’m only giving my usage experience after 6 months and I have not fallen out love of this device one bit. The display is gorgeous, the pen (not included in the box) is responsive and sensitive enough for sketching and note taking. Go for the i7, 16GB model and you’ll unleash the full power of the device. It is 100% worth the extra bucks. Otherwise I would not suggest going for the i5 model or the 8GB RAM model and pay such a hefty price tag. There are much more capable i5 laptops at half the price point. The i7 model on power mode handles 1080p gaming with breeze. The display makes the game look all the more fantastic. And you can game on 2k resolution too reliably on single player mode on most modern titles. The battery lasts long enough for you to forget to charge it regularly. The hardware is way more capable than the software, Windows 10 feels like its lightyears behind the hardware, especially when its in tablet mode. Its not super intuitive to get around multiple software or switching between them.

Update: Accessories unreliable. Both type cover and pen failed within the year of purchase. Support is not good anymore. They barely respond.Pro X is exactly how they showed it in their advertisements. The screen feels huge after my last Pro 3. Resolution is crisp, colours are vivid. And it is really so thin and light!!! I enjoy working on it all day. While using MS Office, non stop, PDF editing, screen active for 9 hours continuously, browser running continuously, the battery was only down 40%. I still was able to come back home, watch a few youtube videos, play a little Solitare and I still had 30% battery left by the time I had to sleep. Charges very quickly. Pen sensitivity even with the old pens is an incredible leap forward. All in all, a perfect device for business professionals.

Firstly, I would like to inform everyone reading the reviews just to ignore people complaining about poor service or overpriced etc.. please only read the reviews from people who have already purchased from Amazon. Those are most legitimate.Coming to the device, anyone who plan to purchase a surface pro should know what he need and the device advantages and limitations of buying such a device. Unless you know that, its the fault of the buyer and not the device.Pros:This is the best 2 in 1 device you can buy anywhere in the world. Period.1. Being a 2 in 1, you can use it as a tablet and also a PC as and when required. Will help people who travel a lot and need a handy device for their daily computing tasks.2. It’s pretty looking device and with the funky keyboard covers (which is of course essential when you get a pro) the device is sure a head turner.3. Coming to the performance, it boots fast, and performs every day to day tasks with the normal applications like the msoffice or pdf’s etc.4. The display is quite good and the camera will be of good quality for online meetings and the rear for document scanning or some casual photos. (Certainly not the quality of mid range/15k mobile camera)5. The iris scanner works great and logs you in pretty fast.6. Unlike android tablets or so called 2 in 1s or the Ipad pro which are yet mobile device with a bigger form factor and just rely on the store apps, surface is a real 2 in 1 which is great for serious computing in the real world.Cons:1. The battery performance could have been better. One would expect this kind of device to hold at least 12Hrs of juice on continuous moderate usage which is not the case.I believe it can hardly withstand 6 to 7 Hrs.2. The black color wasn’t available with the 8/128 gb variant. The platinum on a long run can turn dirty on a long run.3. MS should have at least packed the keyboard cover along with the device (considering the price point) which would have given a true 2 in 1 experience for the buyers.4. As many stated here, this is not for gamers and one should know this before buying. (This is not a con actually)5. The device does heats up at times. During the initial updates, it did get quite hot. Considering not fan inside, te heat is expected but then, you don’t get the noise of a fan.To sum up, it’s a pretty decent device but then not a value for money gadget (unless you get a keyboard cover inside the box). But sure the mobility and flexibility it provides justifies the premium pricing. Yes, surface is something best in class in its category. Thank you for reading.Edit: After using the device for a couple of months, I decided to give a go at the pen. For the Renaisser Rafael 520 which is much cheaper compared to the surface pen. My daughter who is very interested in art Painting loves the pen and you can see her digital painting done using Autodesk Sketchbook in the photo. She prefers writing using the pen over typing. I updated my review just to say the use case of surface pro keeps growing justifying the price. If you just want a laptop and compare it with a surface pro, then you have the wrong comparison!

This is surface go 2.. some mix up in the descriptionDevice is awesome. Premium feel.Charges fast. Speed is good. No lag even with 10 tabs open in Microsoft edge browser with few other applications open. Can’t jump to other apps easily in android tab or an ipad. Still using s mode. So no Google apps, no Adobe reader. Restricted app store. Type c port doesn’t charge. My needs fulfilled.

Very nice looking surface. But that’s it.So far useless, unless you want to spend over 2000$ for just browsing the internet, nothing installs, including antivirus – returning it.Better option (even less expensive) Surface Pro 7 – with real Intel processor

The media could not be loaded.  I use the laptop typically for word processing and media streaming. I have not used it for processor intensive tasks. Here I have compared the Surface to the Macbook Air 2020.The keyboard is just average. I have compared it to the Apple Macbook Air (2020) whose keys feel much more tactile and sturdy. The Macbook does not miss a single keystroke, but on the Surface Laptop 3 often keys do not register keystrokes. The issue is most prominent in the Spacebar key. It does not register keystrokes when the key is pressed on the sides. I have documented this issue in the attached video. The touchpad while better than most midrange laptops, is subpar compared to the Macbook Air. The Macbook touchpad is much more responsive. The screen of the laptop is also very reflective. The touchscreen feature is not of much use for the Surface Laptop is atypical clamshell laptop.

Do NOT decide according to the reviews given here on Amazon.I bought a Lenovo laptop but had to return and went with this. And I am not disappointed (till now. Using since last 1 month)Pros:* Best productivity device* Pen is the best. (better than Apple & Samsung’s, in my opinion)* Note taking is an absolutely amazing experience (my main purpose as a student)* Unlike iPad, this can run almost all the softwares one generally needs (if you don’t need to run them, go for the iPad)* No fan noise* 1 USB-C and 1 USB-A ports are generally enough (I was skeptical about this before buying)* Don’t need to buy the official keyboard. I am using my old wireless keyboard+mouse.* No matter how or where you sit, there’ll be always a comfortable angle the hinges will provide* Easy to carry (due to form factor and weight)* Bezels are not that annoying (as some YouTube reviews suggest)* Speakers are good for a productivity device (of course, for movies and stuff, you’ll have to use headphones)* BeautifulCons:* Camera in the back is completely useless.(for students: you can’t simply take a photo of the board and paste it in your notes)* Battery is okay, not amazing.* I have heard that Microsoft’s service will be a complete pain in the back. (99% sure about this)* 1 year warranty can’t be extended in India.* No student discount in India.* Price. (well, for the value it provides, it is reasonable in my opinion. But yes, inr 10,000 for pen and 15,000 for the keyboard is a bit too much)* Crashes a lot. But it’s a software issue. Will get solved in future updates I guess

This device is really only good for basic computing as it doesn’t support many 64 bit application or software. Apparently this is due to the fact that it comes with Windows 10 Home edition (upgrade isn’t possible I don’t believe) and the ARM processor. Just google ‘ARM processor limitations’ or something similar and you’ll find a list of what apps and software this device DOESN’T support. Microsoft’s product page says this: “App availability and compatibility may vary. At this time, Surface Pro X will not install 64-bit applications that have not been ported to ARM64, some games and CAD software, and some third-party drivers or anti-virus software.” So – a beautiful device that I thought would be perfect for my son, and it was a big fat disappointment. I am selling it and buying a different device. This device should come with WAY more caveats of what it doesn’t support

Very impressed with the laptop. Looks extremely elegant, very sleek and light weight and performance is excellent for day to day office work, light gaming and streaming. I chose surface over macbook as my work involves using multiple monitors and I am more used to the windows operating system. The touch screen is a plus and very helpful while scrolling through a lengthy documents or navigating around on youtube. Will definitely recommend this machine for someone looking for a premium looking machine with powerful windows OS performance.

I’d give 3.5 stars as Apple has a better alternative now (M1)An average laptop with premium looks, at ultra-premium price. Just Microsoft thingsPros: 1. A good laptop for college students for its easy portability.2. Microsoft has done well with the built quality as it is sturdy and good looking.3. Very fast charging4. No heating issues with excessive browsing, zoom meetings, if used while not charging the laptop5. Good battery backup, could easily get 5-6 hrs for a normal college student(non-gamer)6. Instant-on is very handy7. Face- recognition is good but not 100% accurate, need good amount of light8. Screen produces almost accurate colours, easy on eye.9. Windows 11 compatibleCons: 1. NO Microsoft office included, which is unacceptable.2. Sometimes, screen flickers and colours become highly saturated, but with a quick restart everything becomes Fine. This happened in the first few months but now it’s fine. May be some software issue.3. The keyboard being alacantara finish doesn’t give you good feel while typing, although silent, keys are very soft which may not have long life.4. Windows has inbuilt inconsistencies and other problems, sadly, which really takes off the premium feel.5. Screen is highly reflective but in artificial lighting it’s fineVerdict: Expensive option considering M1 MacBook Air with much better specs, at similar price. Can only consider if one badly needs versatility of windows. For students, it’s a great laptop.

I received this device on Aug 29th, the warranty of this laptop is supposed to be 1 year, so the warranty period shouldn’t end before Aug 28th, 2022. But while I checked on Microsoft site and found that this device once has been registered on 2020/12/02, its warranty period will end on 2022/02/01. That’s unacceptable. The product we buy should include the device itself and the warranty period, they are combined as a whole, it’s unfair for we customers to pay a total amount but didn’t get a complete product. Moreover, the Amazon’s customer service promised to get me an answers on Aug 30th, but yet I received any respond.

People like me who like the travel convenience of a tablet and working convenience like a laptop – this is a perfect choice. Light weighted this laptop can easily be used as a tablet or a conventional laptop. I love it!The touch sensitivity has an issue though. It is not as responsive as you would have experienced in an iPad or any other touch screen device. But not too bad.

Lessons learned after 18 months of use.Lesson#1: This is really not for gaming.I play dota2 with a completely low configuration and barely reach 60fps max untill it drops to 30 when get heat quickly. Its even harder to play Tekken, Fifa20 or CSGo with lowest configuration. I spent extra bucks to buy game-boosting software and its effect is minimal. So never ever and never ever think of buying this for gaming. You can buy atleast 2 gaming laptops for this cost and extra accessoriesLesson#2: Surface design sucks.I mean the base of this laptop really sucks. Unlike traditional laptops or any tablets, its surface (base) of this laptop is completely flat making it hard to lift it normally. You either have to lift holding the screen edges or the hinge.Lesson#3: Magnetic charger design sucks to the core.. I have to remove the cable multiple times daily because of this the cable gets twisted and that is a curse to the magnetic cable and the cable gets damaged internally.I use extended monitor and keyboard using type-c dock. And because of the gap between the magnetic charger and type-c inlets. I can only plug the cable in only in a single direction which is one reason why the cable gets twisted and further damaging the cable over time. I have already damaged the original charger and second chargers today morning. I am not going to take risk of wasting moneky buy a new one. So only opotion I am looking for is to get a type c charger which allows me to plug extended monitor and keyboard. I am thinking to sell this crap because of this.

Do not buy Microsoft Products. As they do not have proper after sales service. Where there is any problem they directly replace device with high charge (32.7k for Surface pro) and provide old repaired product (termed refurbished). If you use it with utter care then also in 2-3 years battery needs replacement for that too they charge such a high amount and provide you old used product in replacement where you are not sure of what is condition and can go off or stop working in next few months then its total waste. And they will convenient replace Battery for 5-6k and sell to other customer at 32.7k early huge amount of money by simply fooling customers on the name of after sales service.

Surface Pro 7 is, what it is and it is a good machine. Mine is the 8GB RAM and 256 GB storage, black variant. I usually use it for reading and annotating PDFs on the move, and have used it up to 5 hours for that, in Airplane mode. But DON’T buy the black variant. Even with careful ordinary usage, the color around the USB and the charging port started to wear off within LESS THAN 2 MONTHS, revealing ugly white patches underneath. I can take care of it like a 2 year old child, but not like a 2 month old baby! I’d rather not have such a thing for daily use, where I’d have to be constantly worried about where to place it. And good covers for SP are hard to come by, not to talk of the heat trapping by such covers (and fears of another flickergate that I had with my previous SP4, probably heat induced)

I really liked the size and functionality of the Tablet. Although, it is costly if you buy the type cover and Microsoft office software separately. But overall very satisfied with the purchase.

Now let me preface this by being clear. I am an undergraduate computer science student. My father pretty much gave this computer to me as a gift during Christmas just for something to take notes on. I use the Whiteboard app a lot in fact to be able to take notes on it. I understand that you could type out the notes on a computer or whatever but I prefer using a notebook but at the same time I need to know what I’m writing about and a notebook can only grant me so much space. So this may not be a device for everyone but it is for me at least for the version I got. After two months with this product I could safely say this is a very good product that Microsoft has made. I have used it a little for drawing here and there and it does a fine job and for note-taking it’s a great device with a bit of flaws.Goods*The screen is extremely high-quality. The gloss may turn some people off but I think it’s great it does get a little dusty but that’s easy to clean up.*The mouse pad is great. It reminds me of the MacBook mouse pad but it’s much more responsive and smooth.*The keyboard took me time to get used to, especially considering this is the first time I ever used the laptop without any num keys.*The speakers get as loud as I want them to be but audio definitely sounds crisp and extremely high quality.*The way that the device switches from laptop mode to tablet mode is pretty simple for the most part, there is one thing that however concerns me but I’ll get to that later I like the little bit of tilt that it has on the upper level because it gives me a better elevation to where I want to write.*The magnets are really helpful and strong when it comes to me putting the pen close to the computer.Bads*The battery life because it runs out very fast whenever I’m using the device like I was in class for 50 minutes one time and it drained very fast. I was at full100% battery and at the end of class it drained to 36%.*No USB ports I know more devices are using the USB C Port right now but the limited amount of the USB option really does bug me personally considering that I still have more devices that uses a standard USB cable over a USB C I understand that I could probably buy an adapter for that or whatever but it would have been nice to have more options for the device rather than just 2 USB C port. I’m not saying they should go all in and include two USB ports on the left and one on the right but at least one would have been nice.*There’s no way to lay the screen flat on the table in tablet mode. This is one of the biggest problems because one thing I liked about other surface devices is that they would allow me to position the device anyway I wanted. However with this one you don’t get as many options all you get was the flat bit tilted tablet mode and a viewing mode as you could say. This brings me to the biggest problem with the device and this may sound minor to many people but for me it kind of scares me.*The tablet to laptop mode hinges scares me to the point where I think if I bend it enough it’s going to break. I’m not sure when it will happen but I will make sure to update people when it does. Because the device looks very sensitive and again it scares me and I usually don’t get scared of this type of thing but I am for this one. When I am writing or drawing I exert a lot of pressure on a table surface or notebook that is how I feel comfortable when I write or draw and on this device I get scared every time I do something like that.*It is a little overpriced for it’s specs and functionality. 256gb ssd is good but for $1,500 that’s too much. Considering that there are laptops with the same functionality and better specs this was a bit expensive for what it is.Overall this is a great device may not be for everyone but it is great non the less for me. It will not automatically replace a tablet for those that have one and may not be the best tool for artist. But considering that there are people that may want a device that has the same functions of a tablet but also be able to use it as a computer this is a very good device for them if they are ok with the pricing. Keep in mind the version that I bought was not ment for gaming I didn’t buy it to play video games, so for those that are getting this there is gonna be alot of restrictions when it comes to gaming.

It was either this or an XPS 15 – usually what reviewers pair this up with. All the reviews are correct, this machine is- a bit overpriced with a less than optimal chip- lacks any USB-A ports (only has two USB-C), except for one on the power brick- Insult to injury by asking the user to pay an additional $120 for the slim pen 2- Heavy and uncomfortable to cuddle with on your lap- Slim Pen 2 feels light and cheap, and the edges(near the erasure) dig into your skin(there’s a bur on the edge from the molding)But. . .+ Screen really is nice with good colour+ well built, minimalist+ pen, keyboard, and track pad experience very solidI bought this because I really I needed a mid-range performing machine that can do the occasional photoshop/mark up (I’m an Art Director) for overpaint reviews and can dance around TEAMS, Google enterprise, watch movies, etc. Doesn’t have to be highend 3D machine or a one stop video editor – I have my desktop for that. The Tomtoc urban bag fits this machine pretty well.https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B0851F8Q7W/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

First of all: I am a tech junky and have bought a dozen, or more, portable computers over the years. I generally end up frustrated with poor screen quality, misrepresented battery stamina, poorly backlit (or not at all) keyboard, poor trackpad, or something else I didn’t know prior to purchase.I bought two. One for my wife, one for me. I chose the 32GB with 11th Gen Intel i7 CPU with independent NVIDIA GE Force 3050 RYX graphics card. This is one absolutely impressive computer after 5-days. Windows 11 takes a little getting used to. It’s not bad, just a little different. Eventually you have to upgrade so we’ll all have to switch at some point.Battery appears to last over 13-hours with screen as bright as it gets. It has zero lag switching apps. It seems much “lighter” than prior OS.It is a little heavy to be truly portable, but you could choose the 13” display instead of the 14.4”. I’m sure the long lasting battery is responsible for the overweight laptop.I will use it “in-dock” 85% of the time running two 35” monitors, multiple data hog financial streaming apps, desktop version of MS Outlook and a ton of browser windows tabs. With the quality and quantity of RAM I suspect it’ll be just fine, but I will update after a while operating that glut of functions.Concluding my rambling review, I love the MS Surface Studio 14.4” w 32GB and 1TB SSD. If I had to say something negative it’d be that the generic dock the claims to work with it does not work in my ZIP code. Pay up for the MS branded dock. Use quality cables and plug strips to get the most out of your Surface.Go ahead and buy yours! You’ll love it as much as I do!

Quick take/summary – Don’t buy!I’d really love to give this a great review, but I can’t. The deal breaker is that there is a charging issue with this device that showed up right as my 30 day warranty ended. The good news is that a hard reboot resets the machine and fixes the charging issue (so far), but the bad news is that I have needed to reboot the machine a number of times (journal below). This stopped being effective in February and I purchased a usb-c cord. Everything works now. I suspect I had two different issues. Almost non-existent response to community and individuals. Poor experience, no acknowledgment or explanation. Replacements tend to have the same issue per reports of others.Battery life: Standard browsing or video usage, after a few days of use and updates, you can probably expect about 6 hours of life. With barely any program, other than office, on the system I managed to get 8 hours, but as I loaded a few programs, this went down the drain. This is far short of advertised, but that works for me, even if I’m mildly annoyed. The big kicker is that when you game and the (very quiet and effective) fans come on, the battery life is reduced to 30-40 minutes from a full charge. Something to be mindful of.Rubber bumpers fell off after about 6 months. Probably heat related causing adhesive to fail.I love the function and feel of this machine. It is a unique piece of equipment, where I mostly need a laptop, but occasionally I need a tablet for writing. The slim pen 2 has no lag, which would be a deal breaker for me.The feel of the device is great. The function is unique and what I personally needed. The battery life and charging issues are huge disappointments. more complete reviews of the device itself are below.————–Detailed Reviews Below————–Long detailed first review is at the bottom.***4/30/2023***Charging issues #60 or so: For the past two months charging stopped multiple times a day. Hard Reboot was not effective. I replaced the charger with a USB C at over 100 watts and it the past month has had zero issues. I suspect I had two different charging issues software/hardware. If you purchase, upgrade software/firmware and expect to need a usb-c 100w+ charger.***02/15/2023***Two days after 01/06/2023 it started not charging again multiple times a day. Got worse over time.No response from Microsoft, still frustrated users on forums.***01/06/2023***The bumpers have half fallen off. There are two 1’ish long strips on the bottom of the machine and the adhesive has failed most likely to three weeks of a game and heat.***10/17/2022***Charging issue #5. Fan buzzing stopped after a couple days. Running cooler. Stopped charging again. Hard reboot for charging fix again. Firmware update did not fix charging issue.***10/4/2022***Fan issue: lasted a week. The fan was buzzing like it’s hitting something and almost sounds like a fly buzzing, if that buzzing was slowed down and deeper. most notable when the laptop is tipped and not flat.***10/2/2022*** (resolved/stopped happening)Heat issue: machine seems to be running hotter than in the past. vents reached 122.4 degrees F. The palm rest on the right side (most heat is generated on this side) was uncomfortable at about 99 degrees F. Heat did drop a few degrees after measurement but still very warm. Vents were not blocked (first thing I checked.***9/23/2022***Charging issue #4: Stopped charging and I noticed around 45%. Light indicating power on plug was also out despite tight connections. Hard reboot (holding down power button) fixed and machine is now charging again with power light back on. At this point, the hard restart definitely seems like it’s the solution, indicating to me a software issues. As there is a feature to extend the batter life by attempting to keep charges at 80%, I feel like this may be the culprit. I haven’t looked into a way to disable the “smart” charging feature. If someone is interested in purchasing despite warnings, you might want to look up if that’s possible and do a search to see if others have tried it and what their outcomes were.***9/16/2022***Charging Issue #3: Charger stopped charging. Light indicating power to charger went out. I immediately did a hard reboot by holding down the power button and sliding down the screen. On start-up the power light to the charger came back on. Machine was cool, so no heat issues. For now it appears hard reboots fix the charging issue, temporarily. Theory on Microsoft forums is that the issue is software related and related to the smart charging software.***update 9/6/2022***Charging issue #2: Charging light on side of charging cable head went out and laptop stopped charging. I flipped the head and that didn’t work. I unplugged at source, tested for power (all good on power strip) and plugged back in. Nothing. I checked the cable on the transformer unplugged and re-plugged multiple times. on the third try the charging light came back on and there was power again.***update 8/31/2022***Charging issue – charger quit. Fans had also quit a couple of days ago. A hard reboot fixed both issues. I didn’t notice the fans other than the machine was “kind of warm” without fans coming on. (over the past couple of days) then it started getting really warm today and while I was looking for a way to manually turn fans on (I didn’t find one) the charging went out.A hard reboot seems to have fixed both charging and fan issue (holding down power button until everything shuts down) also the machine had cooled down as I was saving battery life and preparing to never access my machine again and a need to return it.***update 8/29/2022***I’ve knocked off two stars. The battery life when using games that require power are is just unusable for more than a short 30-40 minute burst if you were fully charged. I feel that really limits the usability for anyone who selected the model with the video chip. I’m mostly annoyed at the false advertising. The run time is decent if you’re just doing every day work, but decent is 6-8 hours, which is also not what was advertised. I reduced my refresh rate to 60, and that didn’t seem to affect the gaming duration. It was bad either way.Oh, and I also have managed to bump loose the power cord a few times without noticing. Not as secure as I’d like when actually used on a lap. On a desk, a non-issue.***update 2022_08_19***Just tried out the kingmaker game with battery only and boy does power drain fast. If you’re using the power with the fan running, I suspect you’ll be lucky to get two hours out of the machine. I got less than an hour, but the battery was not completely full, so heads up. I have my screen refresh at 120, so maybe I’d get better battery life if I reduced. I was just surprised it was so short. My other laptop would chew through batteries when gamming too, but I got more life out of it.The pen, which I thought had a pretty secure magnet, does manage to get knocked loose. It would be nice if Microsoft had some kind of notification when it disconnected. I’ve noticed when I get up from my chair, it’s been on my lap, and something falls to the floor. It’s always the pen. Issues will likely depend on how you use it and if you wear things that can get caught by the pen, but heads up.I’m still happy with the purchase. The power features I would be unlikely to really use unless plugged in. In this sense, people that need the power are unlikely to be happy with this machine if they expected that power and prolonged battery life while unplugged.***update 2022_08_15***Finally had some time to load pathfinder kingmaker to the laptop. The game instantly caused the fan to ramp up to dispel the heat. The right side became very warm, both where my right hand palm rests while I type, and underneath on the right side. Warm, but not burning to type on or on the lap. The ramped up fans move a lot of very warm air, but it’s the sound of air moving, and while it’s noise, it’s not unpleasant or uncomfortable to talk with like many other computer fans I’ve had. I give the cooling a good thumbs up, although I was surprised it came on so quickly.***update 2022_08_06***The battery life continues to improve slightly. 2.5 hours of dnd using hero labs, wifi, moderate browsing for rules clarification and minimal sketching burned up about 11% battery life. The machine has been incredibly quiet although I haven’t run taxing software yet. This is all a HUGE improvement over my previous machine where the fan would be constantly on with minimal work and would roar when gaming, when I used to game.I find transitioning between keyboard and note taking/sketching to be an extremely satisfying experience. I had no idea how much my previous laptop bothered me will all the flaws of the keyboard and touchpad issues I experienced. I will say the transition can be a little clunky when I’m typing and then need to make a note and then typing again. I find that I don’t like making more than a one-word notation in laptop mode and so I’m switching between both when doing a mixed document. One note handles written text differently than I thought it would. If you’re mixing typed text with written, they act as two separate things. Hitting enter will move your typed text (if done above) but it won’t move what you’ve written, which will need to be moved separately . As such, you may want to write to one side, type on the other and then select and combine when done with both to print as a pdf document.***update 2023_08_04***Battery life: I switched back to 120hz and while the battery is still draining faster, after 4 hours I still have a 55% charge. Of note, I’ve been away from my keyboard quite a few times today, but the screen is set to remain on and I also was streaming music for part and there was a lot of internet searching today. What I am saying is that after all the updates, the battery life for 120hz, while not on par with 60hz, seems greatly improved for basic tasks. Obviously taxing software will burn through batter life much faster.******What are the key things you should know before buying?Battery Life:The battery life you likely to receive from the unit depends on usage and programs and blah blah blah. I did a lot of research in this area for real world usage and found that when I change the screen resolution to 60hz, there is a noticeable improvement of the battery life to about 8-10 hours of solid use. Ten looks like the absolute max. With the screen at 120hz, I was watching the battery life fall and would guess about 3 to four hours of use. My usage was browsing, one note, excel, email, and hero labs (a DND character application). While I have a machine with a video card, I don’t tend to game on my laptop, and I haven’t played with drafting tools yet. I have not done long term testing to see if 120hz eventually has an improved battery life after configurations/learnings/updates are all complete. I switched my machine back to 120hz and it now appears to be draining slower, so maybe? I would say to plan on my first case scenario, and I’ll update if I notice better performance long term. While I can’t say Microsoft lies about the battery life, as they provide the ridiculous specs in which they achieve it, I will say that their numbers are misleading based on real world use.Slim Pen 2 and SLS combo:If you’re not purchasing this with a pen, you are purchasing the wrong machine. I believe this machine is specifically for those that need a hybrid work environment. Drawing concepts in presentations, showing work for math, chemistry, and physics homework, or just sketching design concept ideas. This machine works well for these things, but all require a pen. There are cheaper and higher performing machines out there if this is not your need. Microsoft sells these separately, but they should be purchased together, else, why buy an SLS?There is practically no lag with the slim pen 2! Lag was my biggest issue with surface and pen technology. I would not say it is perfect, but when you’re looking for rough handwritten notes, this device fits the bill and the slim pen 2 is fantastic. I won’t say it’s perfect as zooming in on lines you draw the pen will want to meander, but for real world rough uses, I give it a thumbs up.The magnet to hold the pen is strong and the location is under the touch pad area (to the front, there’s a lip on the edge of the device). Not a perfect connection, but unlikely to be lost when NOT in a bag. Bags with junk will bump and who knows, so FYI. It’s nice to be out of the way while typing, and available for use.Performance:I can’t speak to this. I don’t benchmark, and people can go out there and review that themselves. I haven’t opened up inventor or fusion yet. I still need to load. I feel these reviews are all over the internet though, unlike battery and pen usage, so I expect my results will be the same. I also don’t do complex modeling, so my usage in this area would be light and not useful to someone who does it for a living.Note: This is now a year old and not a powerful computing device. If performance is a MAJOR concern, you might want to invest in more current machines. This was not super powerful when it first came out.Keyboard and Pad:The keys click nicely. May last laptop had very compressed keys (with a T key that started to fail) and this keyboard feels much better. Key locations feel intuitive. The Keyboard lighting works well and has different brightness options. I have mine on the lowest. The pad clicks nicely, and I don’t accidently bump and click like I did with my other laptop.Windows 11:If you are not used to the operating system, it’s a change from windows 10. I greatly dislike change for the sake of change. You can read online reviews about the layout. It’s different but I am slowly getting used to it. I did have to figure out how to navigate and what some of the symbols meant. You can still pin items to the taskbar, and there are some items you have to change in system and personalization or right click the taskbar and select taskbar settings. After I figured it out, it’s fine, but change (grumble grumble)There are also a lot to the system, so poking at the various options to understand how you can tweak your laptop might be good. But, if you just want it to work, after a slight learning curve it is fine.Stability and set-up:Set-up was pretty easy. Of note, the power cord has a light on its head opposite to where it connects to the laptop. This allows you to see if the power is on, if you have a charging issue. My power strip had been bumped off and I had to google, once I knew there was supposed to be a light and where, it was easy to figure out I had no power and turned the power strip back on.Stability seems mostly good. No crashes. The screen orientation changes work but are a bit weird when transitioning. “Jumpy” might be a good way to describe. Once settled it’s all good. The hinge and magnets:This thing is stiff. A technic to adjust the screen into different positions. When lying flat I lift the edge closest to me and lift the entire screen fully open, and then I tilt the screen down. I reverse this when transitioning instead of moving and then trying to transition the screen over the viewing angle I want. I found this to be much easier and less scrapping. Otherwise, you’re fighting the device, so heads up.The hinge itself seems good. We will see how it holds up.Quality of build:While parts of the device are metal (screen portion), the base appears to be plastic. Metal lasts better than plastic, and time will tell how this holds up. I expect discoloring and scratches on the plastic, and I hope I never drop this.Weight:This is heavier than I thought. While my last power laptop (incredible fully maxed device that lasted me seven years before the keyboard started dying) was slightly heavier and larger with a 13″ screen, this feels heavier despite being smaller and slightly lighter. It weighs in at just over 4lbs. It is smaller and so more dense. The screen is a great proportion and I feel like there’s more viewable space. My previous laptop had a wide screen, and it wasn’t a great use of real-estate for a laptop.Heating:As mentioned, I’m doing everyday tasks and the laptop barely registers as warm on the bottom. One trend I’ve noticed with other “performance” laptops, is that the containers are too small to appropriately cool the devices and they get incredibly hot (looking specifically at you, Dell, who I will never buy from again). Already this device is better than a number of other slim “performance” laptops I’ve looked at.What were my primary motivations in purchasing and who might this work well for:People who need to draw to communicate ideas.People who need a long battery life.People who need a portable device that doesn’t lag when writing and they need to write.People who hate putting keyboards on the surface of a table or lap because… it just seems wrong.People who need some power, but are okay with a non-top of the line machine.People who are okay spending premium money for a lower spec’d item that fits the above unique needs.Overall?I knocked off a star due to specifications, but the machine works exactly as I hoped, and I am enjoying my interaction with it. I understand why so many compare it to a mac. Apple products have a great “feel” to them, and this laptop definitely replicates some of that if not all of it.Final note:If you purchase, defintely look up various issues that might be important to you. I found reviews tended to be very superficial and even biased. I found that looking up issues (battery life, heating, crashing, etc.) helped me weed out some of the machines I was looking at. It wasn’t that none of the machines had negative reviews, but more the quantity of negative reviews compared to others. The SLS definitely has had negative reviews, but the amount compared to others I was looking at were significantly less, so I took a leap at the high price tag, and so far I’m happy.I will update as I run into changes and get a feel for the performance of the piece too. I hope this helped.

I understand why so many compare it to a mac.
